We offer low-cost rentals to our students. Many of these instruments have been donated to us. If you have a violin, viola, cello, or string bass that is not being used, consider donating it to our program. We accept instruments in any condition, and we are in need of cellos and basses especially
Why do we need Instruments?
One reason stringed instruments can be taught to younger children is that the instruments are available in many smaller sizes. Children in 3rd grade often start on a 1/4 or 1/2 size instrument and progress through two or three sizes during the next several years before finally reaching full-sized instruments. Instruments must be the proper size for a child, and of playable quality, which excludes many cheap instruments. To assure that children have access to appropriately-sized and affordable instruments, our program is actively seeking donations of instruments. As our program grows, we want to continue to offer low-cost rentals to our students. Donations of quality instruments help keep our costs down, as well as insuring that an instrument continues to be useful.
What instruments do we accept?
We accept donations of violins, violas, cellos and string basses, in any size and playing condition, with or without strings, cases and bows. Especially useful to us are the fractional-sized instruments (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 7/8) that school-age kids use, but we accept full-size instruments as well. We have a particular need currently for cellos; we cannot fully meet the needs of our scholarship students, much less offer affordable rentals to the rest of our students. If you are considering a meaningful donation, consider a cello!
How can I make a donation? Is it tax deductible?
Please contact us at info@albanystrings.org to arrange your donation. We may be able to pick up the donation within the mid-valley area, or you can drop it off at a prearranged location convenient to you. MVPS is a registered Oregon 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization so your donation is tax-deductible. We will provide you with a receipt of donation. You may wish to have your donation instrument professionally appraised; we are not professional luthiers and cannot provide an estimate of value for tax purposes.
Can I purchase a new instrument for the program to use?
Absolutely! Through a local violin shop, MVPS has access to instruments at near-wholesale prices, much more affordable than through typical retail outlets. Please contact us if you are interested.
