No audition is required
To get the most out of JO, incoming players need to know the notes, scales and rhythms presented in Essential Elements book 2 through page 25. If a student can slowly go through Mahler's Theme (#126) and March from Peasant's Cantata (#155) and explain and demonstrate how to play each note, rhythm, and bowing, they are ready for JO. Fast playing is not a requirement--you'll learn that in JO!
Students who have successfully completed Level 2 will meet this criteria. Students who are currently in Level 2 may be able to join mid-year (after the winter concert) if they work on their own to meet the goals above. Your teacher will be able to help you and tell you if you're ready to make the jump.
2 for 1 Orchestra Enrollment! If you are enrolled in a Level 2 or Level 3 class, you can join Junior Orchestra for FREE!
Auditions for Fall 2023 will take place 6:30-8:00pm Thursday Sept 28 at the AYO Music Center, 1405 Pacific Blvd. Auditions are heard on a first come basis.
An audition (playing test) of music provided by the conductor is required in the fall for all players, both new and returning. This ensures that returning students are seated correctly in the ensemble according to their latest playing skills and helps the conductor choose music appropriate to the entire group. This ensemble demands fluency on the instrument in positions other than 1st position, a variety of bow strokes, and attention to musical phrasing, dynamics, and tone quality. The skills taught in Level 3 are expected for Chamber Orchestra musicians.
Students may audition to join in the fall (late September) and after the winter concert (early February).
2 for 1 Orchestra Enrollment! If you are enrolled in a Level 3 class and can successfully play the audition music, you may join Chamber Orchestra for FREE!
