About MVPS

How it Began

The Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia was started in 2007 by three parents who saw the need for a strings program in Albany. Albany schools had a strings program for many years, but due to budget constraints, cut the program 25 years ago. Since then, there has been no opportunity for youth in the area to get acquainted with the violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Private instructors in Albany were hard to find and an orchestra was non-existent.

The parents wanted to have opportunities for their children to explore their interest in these orchestral stringed instruments in Albany, and suspected other parents also wanted this opportunity for their children. After assessing the interest level in Albany, Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia was formed as an after-school strings program. They hired a strings instructor, found a venue, and spread the word about the new program. The first session started in September 2007 and consisted of 10 students. MVPS was given 501(c)(3) non-profit status in April 2008.

Continued Growth

Since then, MVPS has expanded its program to three different levels to accommodate varying skill levels and the number of students participating has grown to over 120! Starting in the fall of 2009, a beginner class became available at Timber Ridge School in Albany, getting a strings program back in an Albany public school for the first time in 25 years! Classes were added in North Albany at Oak Grove Elementary in 2010. In 2012, the advanced class was renamed the Albany Youth Orchestra, reflecting both its greater size and more difficult repertoire. In 2013, classes were added at South Shore Elementary, and in 2014, at Oak Elementary. 2015 has seen the addition of Oak Grove Elementary and North Albany Elementary and Middle Schools and the formation of the West Albany High School orchestra club.

Our Future

The Mid-Valley Prelude Sinfonia hopes to continue to increase its registrants and school locations, believing you can never have too many musicians in an orchestra. Our goal is to provide affordable and high quality strings education in every Albany school. Please contact us if you would like to see a strings program at your school!
